I still can't believe this story. Let me start at the beginning. About a week ago the microwave started acting funky. It just stopped and lost power even though it was still plugged in. The next day it said "reset" and then it was fine. No biggie. Maybe the EasyMac that I was microwaving was supercharged.
Then it happened again. My husband took a look at it and thought it was fixed. Until I turned it on and it looked like it was going to short out and catch fire. I have never seen him move so quickly as he did to get that thing unplugged.
Of course it is out of warranty. We have lived here for three and a half years. So we called GE and they sent out a repairman. By the way, for the record, I love the GE system- the repairman was able to come immediately and their customer service was awesome. So anyway- he came out, pulled it out of the cabinet, took a look at it, and gave the all-knowing "hmm."
As in, "hmmm", there is nothing that can be done to fix it. Ok. So then he told us that the GE grief counselor customer service rep would call us to discuss our options. Our options? I didn't realize we had any? We have to replace it. What he meant was apparently they were going to call us to break the bad news that we would need to obtain another mortgage to replace the unit we had.
This home came equipped with GE Monogram appliances, upgrades that we were too cheap for would not have chosen. Since the home was already under construction the builder had chosen all the upgrades and we couldn't change them. They did offer a substantial incentive to buy a home already under construction which basically offset the exorbitant upgrades they put in so we didn't mind. However looking back now, if we had any idea how much these appliances really cost I think we may have at least thought twice. Who am I kidding, I loved this house the moment I saw it, I wouldn't have thought twice.
At any rate, right after he left I hopped online to check out the price of microwaves. I knew I was in trouble when none of the websites that carried GE Monogram appliances listed prices. They all said you had to contact the retailer for pricing. So I went to Ebay, where you can always find what you are looking for.
I found it alright. Retail value fifteen hundred dollars. One.Thousand.Five.Hundred. Areyoufrickin'kiddingme? Fifteen hundred bucks? Aren't microwaves like thirty nine bucks at Walmart now?
So yeah, the customer service rep called me. We talked about the fact that it's out of warranty. Lucky for us, GE has a fantastic replacement program so I'm not going to knock it. We were only responsible for 30% of the replacement value since it was only 3.5 years old. But still, 30% is not a small amount. I am dreading the day they tell me the built in refrigerator is shot.
It will take about five business days to get the new one installed. You don't realize how much you use your microwave until it is no longer available. Lucky for us we still have the microwave my parents gave us the year we got engaged. Nine years and it's still kicking. It's also gigantic. I think we could roast a turkey in it. I took some comparison shots for you.
Here is our current microwave:
And here is our "loaner". The coffeepot is in the photo just for perspective. This thing literally takes up the entire counter! I'm not dissin' it, after all, it still works and our fancy schmancy one doesn't, but still...It's huge!
I'm just hoping that five days goes by quickly.

Wow, $500 bucks for a microwave. And $1500 at full coast. I'd expect swarovski crystals at that price. You can get a pretty nice television for that.
Best of luck that no more appliances break.
